For the centuries the spicelands of Moluccas were the scene of force conflict among European and Asian rivals for cloves and nutmeg, which, along with peppers of java and sumatera island were the prime commodities, then as highly priced as they were prized in early east-west trade collisions over commerce also signified dispute over domain. Portuguese, Spanish, English, and Dutch seekers of fame, fortune, and foothold in the archipelago found themselves in violent competition. Not only with another, but also with Arabian, Indians, Chinese, Javanese, and Makasarese.
